Osaka-jō under a crescent moon

Osaka Castle under a moonlit skyEarlier today, just as the sun was setting, my brother and I set out to explore the Osaka Castle Park.

I’d visited the park on several occasions before, but forgot how massive the park is—over 1.07 million square meters—and how majestic the castle appears, particularly when seen under a clear night sky. The best view was saved for last, as a crescent moon rose over the castle just as we were about to leave the park (see photo, right).

During the cherry blossom season each spring, Osaka Castle Park fills up with people celebrating the arrival of the new spring. However, on this evening it was nearly empty, save for the odd jogger or tourist.  Under the klieg lights and in the cool December air, the castle’s imposing size was quite an impressive sight.

Your brother is visiting me in Florida, and the occasion for this is my daughter Jessica’s wedding on the beach in Fort Myers. I was curious to what you know about or what the Japanese version of an historical event known as the 47 samurai. I believe it took place during Tokugawa Shogunate Period, but I’m not sure about that.

I am studying for my masters degree in American History and I should be finished with my thesis and comprehension exams in June. I have been promised an adjunct position with Edison State College here in Fort Myers. I would appreciate hearing from you Kurt and I vividly remember your obsession with locks. You had a key to everything, even your mom’s heart. Marty
